Ohio State Board of Cosmetology - Licenses expiring January 31, 2009 If this is your first Ohio license, you are not required to take continuing education for this next license renewal cycle. For licensees who must receive continuing education to renew their licenses, classes can be earned between now and January 31, 2009. Several important instructions regarding CE include: When taking a course, licensees are required to list their name and cosmetology identification number (e.g. COSM.991234) on the sign-in sheet obtained from the course provider. At the completion of the course, the licensees should receive a certificate which indicates the date and course number for the class, the number of hours given, and must be signed by the course provider or instructor. This certificate should then be retained in a safe and accessible place in order to provide to the Board when requested. If you now hold an active Ohio license, you will need only eight (8) hours of continuing education. Please remember that you may only report those hours earned between February 01, 2007 through January 31, 2009. Under no circumstances are you allowed to report the same CE numbers more than once (ref: OAC 4713-21-03).

If you hold both active manicurist and esthetics licenses,

you will be required to take eight (8) hours for each type of license.

This course focuses on the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 Subpart Z.

This course is designed for use by cosmetologists (including, but not limited to hairstylists, barbers, manicurists, and others as defined by local statute) who might come into contact with blood or other body fluids during the course of their work. Topics covered include an overview of HIV/AIDS, how it is spread, HIV prevention, Universal Precautions (barrier protection, personal cleanliness, and disinfection), other bacterial, viral and fungal infections, sterilization and disinfection, distinction between disinfectants and antiseptics, sanitation of hands, tools and other equipment and requirements for salon ventilation and cleanliness.

A person who is licensed or registered as a cosmetologist under the laws of any other state (or country, or territory of the United States, or District of Columbia) may be granted reciprocity and a license to practice cosmetology without requirement of examination. The applicant's license must be from a state with substantially equal or greater licensing requirements than those required in the state of Ohio. Additional requirements may also apply.
